In 1991 the helicopter industry was revolutionized by the introduction of the Hummingbird 260L, the world’s first four-place FAA certified helicopter turned into a kit by Vertical Aviation Technologies based in Florida, USA. By utilizing the design of the FAA certified Sikorsky S-52 helicopter, the safety, reliability, and performance of the Hummingbird 260L all benefit from years of proven flight time. Starting with this solid foundation, several improvements have been incorporated such as a more powerful Lycoming engine and the nosecone and windshields from the Bell Jet Ranger.

The Hummingbird is a single engine, three-bladed main rotor type helicopter, with a tail rotor. The fuselage is made of aluminum and composites. The Hummingbird is powered by a FAA approved Lycoming aircraft engine. The transmission system consists of a clutch/freewheel unit between the engine and main gearbox, a main driveshaft extending from the top of the main gearbox to the main rotorhead, and a take-off drive from the main gearbox which drives the tail rotor driveshaft, intermediate gearbox and tail rotor assembly. These parts are manufactured to strict FAA design standards.

The Hummingbird cabin sits four large people comfortably. The cabin is 55 inches wide, 56 inches high from floor to ceiling, and 110 inches in length. Two baggage areas 15” L x 20” W x 13” H are located under the forward two seats. Fly 375 miles with four people comfortably, or with two people and 220 lbs. of camping gear!

Pure Air Aviation imports the parts kit from Vertical Aviation Technologies and the aircraft engine from Lycoming. We assemble each Hummingbird helicopter by hand at our manufacturing site in Colombia. We are able to customize each aircraft based on your intended use, whether that be as an executive shuttle, personal transportation, air ambulance, police or military work, or a flight trainer. There are a wide range of options available for electronics and instrumentation. Finally, the exterior paint design and interior cabin finishing are all completed according to your specifications.

The Hummingbird is a real pleasure to fly. Because of its inherently long tail, forward flight is very stable but very agile. The flight control system incorporates electric trim with force gradient spring pressure. Stick forces are very light. Another appealing characteristic is the landing gear. It is such a pleasure to be able to taxi a helicopter and not have to hover. This landing gear design is only found in helicopters costing over a million dollars! The three blade rotor system is very smooth and has a medium inertia rotor providing excellent autorotation characteristics. The clutch is automatic for engaging the rotor system and a rotorbrake is included to slow the rotor during shut down.
